The Summer I Turned Pretty returns to our screens for season 2, but while there's much that will feel familiar to fans of the show's first outing, Belly is in "a very different place" and "in a completely different headspace" in the new episodes, according to star Lola Tung (via Harpers Bazaar).

She added: "I don't think something of this weight has happened to her in her life before, and she doesn't necessarily have the support that she needs or wants. A lot of the people in her life who she would go to for that support, who she would lean on, are not really as much in her life."

Alongside Tung, all of your favourites from season 1 are back for the Prime Video drama's second outing, including Christopher Briney as Conrad and Gavin Casalegno as Jeremiah.

Speaking to Seventeen, Briney said that he was "really excited" for the drama that's to come in the new episodes, adding: "I think what the show does so well and will continue to do so well is be like, 'This is a fairytale, but it's also just the real world.' And as much as Conrad has changed, he [still] has a lot more to grow."

Season 2 is adapted from the middle book in Jenny Han's trilogy, It's Not Summer Without You. Read on for everything you need to know about what's in store.

The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 release date

The first three episodes of The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 arrive on Prime Video on Friday 14th July.

New episodes will then air weekly, with the finale airing on Friday 18th August.

The original source material is part of a trilogy – The Summer I Tuned Pretty was published in 2009, It's Not Summer Without You came out in 2010, and We'll Always Have Summer arrived the following year – so there's plenty more to explore moving forwards.

Speaking to TODAY, Han said: "I'm looking forward to seeing other seasons. Literal seasons. There's a lot more road to hoe."

The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 cast: Who's returning?

  • Sean Kaufman as Steven

The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 plot: What will happen?

The official synopsis for season 2 is as follows: "Belly used to count down the days until she could return to Cousins Beach, but with Conrad and Jeremiah fighting over her heart and the return of Susannah's cancer, she's not sure summer will ever be the same.

"When an unexpected visitor threatens the future of Susannah's beloved house, Belly has to rally the gang to come together—and to decide once and for all where her heart lies."

Speaking to E! News about her hopes for season 2, Tung said: "There are a lot of really special scenes from the book. There are many, many special moments.

"I'm very excited to see the trajectory of Belly's relationship with both of the boys and with everyone in her life. She can only continue to grow and to go on this journey and I'm very excited to go on it with her."

The Summer I Turned Pretty season 1 ending, explained

In season 1's finale, Belly's dreams finally came true when she locked lips with Conrad. The pair had faced their fair share of hurdles but in spite of everything, they found their way back to one another, their bond stronger than ever.

But there's a dark cloud hanging over their romance.

Conrad and Jeremiah's mum Susannah has cancer – a devastating blow that Jeremiah discovered at the debutante ball, while Conrad had long known the truth.

Susannah agreed to undergo treatment after initially refusing, much to her sons' relief, but with the odds stacked against her, you'd be wise to brace yourselves for heartbreak – which will, no doubt, put further strain on Belly and Conrad's relationship.

Plus, we'd expect Jeremiah to be right in the middle of any and all drama given that he's, well, Jeremiah.
